Accidental learning

Every day I make an effort to go toward what I don’t understand. This wandering leads to the accidental learning that continually shapes my life.

What a great philosophy! I always gravitate toward what I already know, too embarrassed to admit ignorance, you know?

Really, really good food for thought.

thank you all! i love yo-yo ma, too -- his music is incredible. and if you’ve ever seen him interviewed, he seems like a wonderful person.

thank you, lynn! we are recovering.

amy, i know exactly what you mean. as a reformed perfectionist, i had to retrain myself to enjoy making mistakes, taking risks, embracing new experiences that i might not excel at.

it’s all about enjoying the ride, right? did you ever see that movie parenthood’? the one with steve martin? okay, i’m jumping onto imdb to look up the quote ...

“You know, when I was nineteen, Grandpa took me on a roller coaster. I always wanted to go again. You know, it was just so interesting to me that a ride could make me so frightened, so scared, so sick, so excited, and so thrilled all together! Some didn't like it. They went on the merry-go-round. That just goes around. Nothing. I like the roller coaster. You get more out of it.”

parenting, homeschooling .. it’s a wild ride and sometimes it makes you think you’re going to lose your lunch ;^) but so much more fun.

Another (less inspiring) quote that I remember from my teen years watching The Simpsons:

"I'd like to clear up the misconception about the upcoming concert. It's 'Yo-Yo Ma'... not 'Yo' Mama'."
